Options Expiry: The $12.3B Non-Event That Whispered a Warning

AnsemFox Macro

The numbers are out. July 17th’s Bitcoin and Ethereum options expiry clocked in at a combined $14.72 billion—tiny by market standards. Total open interest across all BTC options just hit $300 billion, so this was a blip. Yet the put/call ratio for ETH sits at 1.54, while BTC’s is 0.87. That gap isn’t a random variance. It’s a signal. And most traders are too busy staring at green candles to read it.

Context: This weekly expiry landed right after a mid-week rally—BTC touched $64,800 before sliding back to $63,300. Classic “sell the news” without the news actually being big. Max pain for BTC was set at $62,500, meaning the options market expected prices to drift lower to maximise losses for option holders. And they did. Price closed near $63,000, barely above max pain. That’s not a coincidence—it’s the invisible hand of the gamma hedgers. But the real story isn’t where price went. It’s what the ratios tell us about sentiment.

Core Insight: Let’s break the numbers down. BTC’s put/call ratio of 0.87 is mild—slightly bullish, but not aggressively. Meanwhile, ETH’s 1.54 screams bearish bias. Yet total open interest for ETH options is only $48 billion, a fraction of BTC’s $300 billion. That means a smaller pool with a heavier skew. Those 1.54 puts for every call are not just retail FUD. Based on my experience tracking institutional flows during the 2020 DeFi summer and the FTX collapse, a high put/call ratio on a smaller base often signals concentrated hedging. Someone—probably a big player with staked ETH or DeFi exposure—is buying protection. And they’re willing to pay the premium.

Check the implied volatility skew. Put premiums still exceed calls, though the gap narrowed from earlier in the week. The market was pricing in a tail risk event—maybe a macro shock, maybe a protocol bug. But the expiry itself didn’t trigger it. So those puts rolled over or expired worthless. The question is: did the hedger unwind? Or did they roll into next week? If they rolled, the bears haven’t left the building.

The max pain game is fascinating here. BTC’s max pain at $62,500 was below spot, so sellers (market makers) were happy to let the price drift down. They captured the premium. But here’s the contrarian angle most miss: the real action isn’t at expiration—it’s the gamma squeeze that faded. During the week, as BTC rallied, gamma was positive—dealers were forced to buy more BTC to hedge their short calls. That amplified the rally. Then as price pulled back, they sold. The expiry dumped the remaining gamma, leaving the market flatter. This is the “pump, dump, debug” cycle all over again.

Contrarian Angle: Everyone focuses on the expiry date itself. But the interesting signal is the put/call divergence between BTC and ETH. BTC is the gold of crypto—its options market is deep, liquid, and relatively rational. ETH is the tech bet—more prone to narrative swings and leveraged liquidations. So when ETH’s put/call ratio spikes relative to BTC, it often precedes a period of volatility for altcoins. Not a crash—just a shakeout. DeFi protocols with ETH collateral are sitting on an unrealised hedging cost that will hit their books soon. The market is ignoring this because the expiry was a non-event.

And that’s the trap. Everyone will say “options expiry had no impact—move on.” But the data shows otherwise. The total open interest in BTC options grew by 15% month-over-month, while ETH remained flat. That means new money is flowing into BTC derivatives—institutional players comfortable with the regulatory clarity (CFTC jurisdiction). Meanwhile, ETH derivatives stagnate. For an asset that’s supposed to power the next generation of finance, that’s a red flag. t check.

Takeaway: The July 17 expiry is a footnote, but the undercurrents are not. Watch next week’s derivatives data. If the put/call ratio for ETH stays above 1.2 while price drifts up, the hedgers are accumulating—expect a sharp move downward when they stop rolling. And if BTC continues to rally while its put/call ratio drops below 0.7, we’ll be looking at a classic short squeeze. The expiry itself is dead. The signals it left behind are very much alive. “Gas fees higher than the yield. Typical.” Well, this time the gas is the premium on protection, and the yield is the illusion of stability. Repeat.
